Patty paints with oils, usually on wood panels that she builds with birch plywood and vertical grain fir. Oils provide the luminous saturated color that is a driving force in her desire to make art. It is the quality of color that keeps her working to master this challenging medium.
Monotypes are much like paintings. However, the image is painted onto a flat surface or “plate” such as plexiglass and transferred to paper with the use of a press. The completed image is the reverse of the original. The process is more immediate and less direct at the same time. One is never sure quite what the image will look like, so pulling a print off its plate is an immediate reward, like opening a gift or a pottery kiln. Perhaps not always a successful but usually interesting. Again Patty finds the energy of the gesture and the layering of rich color to be the reward that keeps her returning to this process.
Patty’s custom tile work also uses color and gesture to add an extra touch of energy to an environment. Her work can be found in private homes as well as public spaces. In 2006 she completed a colorful tile commission for the Children’s Hospital in Denver Colorado. She is particularly pleased that her work is a part of a place of healing for children. Patty is represented by Pratt & Larson Tile in the Portland, Oregon area. [see links].
